When designing PIT, I came across many challenges. One challenge was the budget. The budget and materials we had were small, so I gravitated towards using cheaper, gestural materials to achieve the look and feel of the PIT.

Prelim Ideas
A large part of my research process was looking into soil horizons and how that effects the color of the PIT. Due to the depth of the PIT being around 20-30 feet, I focused a lot on the B-Horizon of soil with a little darker soil peaking at the top.
Since the budget was less than $200, I also looked into what materials were cheap and available for the process. We were unable to get cork, so I looked into fabric and how that moves when actors interact with it. For the walls, I decided on crunched paper, to successfully show the roots and texture of the soil around the PIT. The actors were able to interact with and familiarize themselves with the lines made in the walls and often interacted with them during shows.

Paint Elevation
After deciding on a pathway to take with the texture and feel of the walls, I did a simple paint elevation to have a plan for how they were painted.
The walls were stock from the Armory, so I added braces to the back of them to keep them safely up.

Model
I also created a simple model to present outside of the show entrance.
